Cybersecurity/Fraud Prevention

What is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting devices, systems and data from unauthorized access, attacks, or damage.

What can you do to protect your information?

  • Strong Passwords: Use unique, complex passwords for each online account. Consider a password manager and periodically change your passwords. If you are notified of an actual or potential breach from a third party which you have an account with, change your passwords immediately.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of security whenever possible by requiring a code or app approval before accessing your online accounts.
  • Phishing awareness: Don't click on suspicious links or open unexpected attachments. Verify sender details. This includes text messages as well. In addition, be aware of common phishing scams.
  • Safe browsing: Stick to trusted websites, avoid pop ups, and check for "https://" in the web address bar. This indicates a secured connection, therefore safer than a plan "http://" site .
  • Device updates: Important to keep your phone, tablet, computer, laptop and apps updated allowing them to have the latest patches that helps keep your devices and the information on those devices safe.
  • Wi-Fi safety: Use only secured networks when possible. Avoid public Wi-Fi from banking or sensitive work unless on a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
  • Data protection: Back up important files and avoid oversharing personal information online.
